Configuring OsCommerce - OsCommerce Backing Up Database

The database backup tool allows the store owner to make backups of the stores database, including all customer and order information. It is recommended that regular backups of the store are taken incase of problems with the store.

Note: The backup directory needs to be created by the store owner and given the permissions of 777 to give the web server write permission for that folder.

Step 1

To backup the stores database click backup → again Backup.
This will present the store owner with some choices.

Step 2

No Compression (Pure SQL) :- This will create a file in the backups directory without any compression.

Use GZIP :- If Gzip is available on the server the store owner will be given the option of compressing the backups to conserve disk space.

Download only (do not store server side)*:- If this option is selected a backup file will not be created on the server but will be downloaded to the store owners computer.

Step 3

Select the appropriate options and click backup. Your backup is complete.

Step 4

To restore the stores database from a backup click on the restore button.

Step 5

If you have stored the backups on the web server you will be able to select the version of the database by clicking on the filename once and then clicking the restore button.

If you want to restore from a backup stored on the local computer press the restore button at the botton corner of the screen. This will then allow you to browse to the file where the backuip is stored.Once you have selected the correct file just click on the restore button.

Note: Do not interrupt the backup or restore process which might take a couple of minutes.
* For security reasons this is best done through a HTTPS connection so that the information cannot be intercepted.
