Email Tips: How To Retreive A Email Message Header

Quite simply, an email header is a short list of information that is appended to the top of an email message when it is sent to its destination.

This information is really only useful to the computers which the email passes through while it is being transferred via the Internet, as it is predominantly used for routing purposes only, i.e. instructing where the email has come from and where it is being sent to. Hence, an email header is usually hidden from view in an email message and you will not notice it as being part of the message.

Gmail / Google Mail

  • While viewing a message, click on More options.
  • Click on Show original.
  • This will display the headers for that message in a new window.

Claris emailer :

Under Mail, select Show Long Headers.

Eudora (before version 3) :

Select Tools, then Options..., then Fonts & Display, then Show all headers.

Eudora (version 3.x, 4.x IBM or Macintosh) :

Press the BLAH button on the incoming mail message.

Mac Eudora 4.x :

Hitting the following will cause Eudora to alter its default setting so that BLAH will be automatically selected for all new email received after this switch is set:

x-eudora-setting:123=y

When checked, Eudora will show all the headers from messages, not just an abbreviated set.

Lotus Notes 4.6.x

From the menu bar, select Actions, then Delivery Information.

Copy the information from the bottom box into your email report at the top of the spam.

Lotus Notes R5

From the menu bar, select Actions, then Tools, then Delivery Information.

Copy the information from the bottom box into your email report at the top of the spam.

Microsoft Outlook

Double click on the email in your inbox. This will bring the message into a new separate window.

Click on View, then Options.

You can also open a message and choose File, then Properties, then Details.

Netscape 3

In the Netscape Mail window, click View, then Document Source.

Netscape 4.xx

Double click on the email in your inbox. Click on View, then Headers, then All.

In Netscape Communicator, just go to the View menu, select Headers and then All, then forward the message as an attachment (which is the default). However, be aware that the recipient will have to view the attachment separately to see the headers; just looking at the message won\'t show them.

Pegasus Mail

To view the full headers for each message, use CTRL + H.

This will show the full headers for the particular message, but will not add them to any reply or forward. You will need to cut/paste the message into the reply/forward to send these headers.

PINE

You have to turn on the header option in setup, then just hit "h" to get headers.

Hotmail

To expose the full message header, click "Options" on the Hotmail Navigation Bar on the left side of the page. On the Options page, click "Preferences". Scroll down to "Message Headers" and select "Full".

Yahoo! Mail

  1. Log into your Yahoo! Mail account.
  2. Click the "Options" link on the left-hand navigation bar.
  3. Click the "Mail Preferences" link on the right.
  4. Locate the Show Headers heading and select "All".
  5. Click the "Save" button to put your new settings into effect.

Full Headers in Microsoft Outlook

  • Outlook Express will include the full headers if you forward the message as an attachment, but the recipient might not be able to read them. To send the full headers in plain text, just open the message, choose the "File" menu and "Properties", then click "Details".

These headers can be copied with CTRL-C and pasted into a new message easily.

  • Outlook 98/2000/2002/2003
    1. Startup Outlook and double click the message to get it in its own window.
    2. Go to the "View" menu and select "Options."
    3. Right click in the "Internet Headers" box and choose "Select All."
    4. Right click again in the "Internet Headers" box and choose "Copy."
    5. Create a new message and paste the copied text into the body of the message.
    6. Fill in the address in the "To:" field as well as the subject, then send the message.
  • Outlook 97
    1. Startup Outlook and double click the message to get it in its own window.
    2. Go to the "View" menu and select "Options."
    3. Right click in the box that contains the full headers and choose "Select All."
    4. Right click again in the same box and choose "Copy."
    5. Create a new message and paste the copied text into the body of the message.
    6. Fill in the address in the "To:" field as well as the subject, then send the message.

MS Outlook Express 4, 5 and 6 for windows

There\'s an even easier solution to expanding Microsoft\'s Outlook Express headers so that you can copy and paste it to another window. You need to be viewing the message in its own window or in a preview pane, then:

  1. Right click on the message and select Properties.
  2. Choose the Details tab and select the Message Source Button.
  3. Select All (CTRL + A) and Copy (CTRL + C).
  4. Close the Message Source window and the Properties window.
  5. Select New Mail and position your cursor in the body of the email.
  6. Paste (CTRL + V) the copied information.

If you have disabled the preview pane.

Using the keyboard:

  1. Highlight the message in the folder
  2. Press alt & enter - this will open a message information window
  3. Press Ctrl & Tab - this changes to the "Details" tab
  4. Press Alt & M - the opens the message source
  5. Press Ctrl & A - to select all the text
  6. Press Ctrl & C - to copy the selected text to the clipboard
  7. Press Alt & F4 - to close the message source window
  8. Press the Esc key - to close the information window
  9. Now, open a new message.

Address the message to the WHOA ISA who is working with you or to the abuse department to whom you wish to report the message. Move your cursor to the body of the new message. Press Ctrl & V to paste the information from the clipboard to the body of the new message.

Outlook Express for Macintosh

Select the email. From the View menu, choose Source. A new window will appear containing the email with full headers. Press command+a to select all, then command+c to copy.

Nettamer

a MS DOS based email and USENET group reader you must save the message as an ASCII file, then the full header will be displayed when you open the saved file with your favorite ASCII editor.

Full Headers in Mutt

Older versions of Mutt handle headers beautifully: no muss, no fuss. Press h to view the headers, then f to forward the message. That\'s it!

In newer versions of Mutt your mime_forward variable must be unset. This is the default on most, but not all, systems. If forwarding a message does not put the full headers in the body, check that variable in your .muttrc.

Full Headers in Elm

Unfortunately, although Elm will happily show full headers while viewing a message, it will not reproduce them when forwarding the mail. So the only method is a bit ugly and time-consuming...

  • While viewing the message you wish to forward, press h to show the full headers.
  • Press s to save the message to a file, and then type any filename you like (i.e. "foo" or "headers"). Elm will acknowledge the save, and then return you to the message index.
  • Compose whatever message you want to send to the postmaster. When you\'re at the spot where you wish to include the headers, insert the file "foo" (or "headers", or whatever you named it). If you\'re using Emacs, the command is CTRL-x i; in Pico, the command is CTRL-r; in vi, ESC:r foo. The file, consisting of the original message plus full headers, will be included in your mail.
