CuteFTP to copy files

CuteFTP is a Windows-based File Transfer Protocol (FTP) client that allows users to transfer files through the Internet. CuteFTP\'s elegant interface makes it simple for the beginner, while it\'s robust suite of features can satisfy even the most advanced user.

In addition to previous features such as Pasting URLs, importing bookmarks and resuming downloads, Version 3.5 of the long-time favorite now offers the following features:

  • Site-to-Site Transfers

  • Transfer Scheduling

  • Cute MP3 and File Finder

  • Connection Wizard

  • Persistent File Transfers

  • Auto Reconnect (RAS)

  • Right-click Shell Integration

  • Advanced Queue features

  • New coding for better memory management, smaller file size, and faster operation

    Launching CuteFTP

Start CuteFTP by double-clicking on the CuteFTP icon. You can also click on \'Start Button->Programs->GlobalSCAPE->CuteFTP\' and select the CuteFTP icon. \'Site Manager\' is the first window displayed and contains information for connecting to your favorite sites.

    Establishing a connection

Before you can connect to an FTP site, you must be connected to your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Since virtually all ISPs differ in connection routines, consult their technical support if you have problems getting your computer on the Internet.

    Connecting to an Existing Site

    1. Select a folder (click on the name) from the list in the left window of the \'FTP Site Manager Screen\'.

    2. Select a site (click on the name) from the list in the right window of the \'FTP Site Manager Screen\'.

    3. Click the Connect button.

After connecting CuteFTP will display a message from the server administrator informing you of rules and regulations on the server. Click the OK button at the bottom of this screen to clear the message.

    Adding a Site

  • Select a folder (click on the name) for the new site to reside in or create a new folder. To create a new folder, click the \'Add Folder\' button. Enter the new folder name and click \'OK\'.

  • Click the \'Add Site\' button. Enter a name for your site in the \'Site Label\' field.

  • Enter the FTP server address in the \'Host Address\' field. The address is obtained from the Service Provider hosting your Web pages. (The host address will follow the format ftp.xxxx.com or 123.456.78.100. It should not contain ftp:// or http://)

  • Enter the User ID in the \'User ID\' field. The User ID is provided by your Service Provider and is case sensitive. It may also be called a Login ID.

  • Enter the password in the \'Password\' field. The password is provided by your Service Provider and is also case sensitive.

  • Click \'OK\'.

  • To connect to your new site, highlight it in the right window and push the \'Connect\' button.

Editing a Site

  1. Select a folder (click on the name) from the list in the left window of the \'FTP Site Manager Screen\'.

  2. Select a site from the list in the right window.

  3. Click the \'Edit Site\' button; the \'Edit Host\' screen will appear. Make any changes and click the \'OK\' button.

Removing a Site

  1. Select a folder (click on the name) from the list in the left window of the \'FTP Site Manager Screen\'.

  2. Select a site from the list in the right window.

  3. Click the \'Delete Site\' button.

Note: Folders may be added, deleted or renamed by selecting the folder and clicking on one of the \'Add Folder\', \'Delete Folder\' or \'Rename Folder\' buttons.

Transferring Files

Once you are connected to an FTP site, you may upload and download files. The left side of the main window contains the names of files on your computer. The right side contains files on the server you are connected to.

To upload a file, you may do any of the following:

  • Click on a file in the left window, hold down the button, and drag the file to the right window.

  • Right-click on a file in the left window and select \'Upload\' from the popup menu.

  • Double-click on a file in the left window.

  • Left-click once on a file in the left window and select \'Upload\' from the \'Commands\' menu.

  • Left-click once on a file in the left window and press the \'Control\' and \'Page Up\' keys simultaneously.

To download files, use one of the following methods:

  • Click on a file in the right window, hold down the button, and drag the file to the left window.

  • Right-click on a file in the right window and select \'Download\' from the popup menu.

  • Double-click on a file in the right window.

  • Left-click once on a file in the right window and select \'Download\' from the \'Commands\' menu.

  • Left-click once on a file in the right window and press the \'Control\' and \'Page Down\' keys simultaneously.

    Resuming Transfers

When a transfer is broken, users may reconnect and resume at the point where the transfer terminated. Simply try transferring the file again. When CuteFTP sees that you are replacing an existing file it will ask to "Resume, Overwrite, or Skip". Choose \'Overwrite\' if you are replacing the file, choose \'Resume\' to complete a broken transfer, or choose \'Skip\' to cancel the operation. NOTE: Resuming file transfers is a site-specific operation. Refer to the log window at the beginning of a session for a \'Status Command\' stating; "This site can (or cannot) resume broken downloads".
