FTP File Transfer Protocol: Uploading Your Web Site Using AnarchieHow do I get my pages to my Web site using Anarchie? There are two parts to this question: "How do I use Anarchie?" and "Where is my Web site?" How Do I Use Anarchie?Anarchie is a shareware FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program. It can transfer files to your computer (download) or from your computer (upload) or to any machine on the Internet which is willing to provide or accept them. The latest version of Anarchie can be found in the Info-Mac archives...if you have Anarchie because you installed Internet Starter Kit for Macintosh, you have an Anarchie "bookmark" which will take you to where the current version can be downloaded. The current Anarchie version as of March 31, 1997 is 2.0.1 (avoid 2.0). Compared with versions before 2.0, version 2.0.1 has some new abilities, and a considerably improved user interface, particularly when you are doing something like maintaining a Web site. Files you have added since you opened a listing window are shown in bold type...those you have deleted continue to appear in the listing window, but with a red strikethrough. These features can make it much easier to remember what you have done and what still needs to be done. Anarchie comes with a short manual on your hard disk. Anarchie also provides good information using Apple Guide...select Anarchie Guide from the Guide (?) menu when Anarchie is the front application. You should become familiar with the basic operation of Anarchie using these sources...at least learn how to display a listing of the files in a particular directory at a given machine ("host"). Where Is My Web Site?If you have a personal Web site, your site will be found on the machine If you have a business Web site, Windseye will have told you where the site
is located. It is on the machine www.schogini.net and in many cases it will be
at the path (in the directory) The username and password you use to access it are the same as your schogini username and password. Anarchie calls the machine the "Server". It refers to the "Path" to a directory or file. To open a listing window showing your Web site, use the FTP... command in Anarchie\'s FTP window, and fill in the server (www.schogini.net), path (see above), username and password. Be sure the Get Listing radio button is selected (for this purpose...the other settings deserve investigation as you learn Anarchie), and click the List button. Once you have a listing window showing the directory where you want to put your files, you can use the "Put..." command in the FTP menu to upload a file, or just drag the file\'s icon from it\'s location in Finder to the Anarchie listing window. But see the remarks in the next section first, to get your image files, Java applet files, etc uploaded correctly. What Else Do I Need to Know? The files containing the HTML description of your web site are text files. Anarchie will figure out that these files should be uploaded as text files. The rest of your files (JPEG images, GIF images, sound files, etc) need to be uploaded as binary files, and NOT be processed into "MacBinary" files. Unfortunately, Anarchie thinks this processing should be done (and the conventional ".bin" suffix should be added) unless you convince it otherwise. Upload your text (HTML) and binary files separately. Select the Text command at the bottom of Anarchie\'s FTP menu before uploading the text files, and select Binary in the FTP menu before uploading binary files (anything else, in most cases). Selecting Binary loses information about those files...that is OK because the World Wide Web expects the resulting files. As you gain experience with Anarchie, you will notice that Macintosh Drag and Drop techniques are well-supported in Anarchie. (See the "Drag and Drop" section in the Anarchie Help\'s Reference portion.) Be sure to tend to the file type setting before using Drag-and-drop to cause your files to be uploaded. To make connecting to your Web site easier using Anarchie, you may want to create an Anarchie "Bookmark" which takes you there automatically. Use the Save Bookmark command in Anarchie\'s File menu while a listing window for your Web site is in front to make a bookmark for the site...use a name which you will recognize...and perhaps use an exclamation point as the first character of the name so that the bookmark will sort early in the bookmark window. Anarchie can create directories for you inside the directory it is showing you. Use the New Directory... command in the Anarchy FTP menu to make a new subdirectory in the directory shown in the frontmost Anarchie listing window. Select a file or directory (or several files, directories or both) and use the Delete command in the Anarchie FTP menu to remove them. If you ask Anarchie to delete a directory which is not empty, it uses a large alert to ask whether you are sure...be sure before you instruct Anarchie to delete the directory and everything it contains. Use the Rename... command in the FTP menu to rename the file or directory selected in the front most listing window. Anarchie will only rename one thing at a time. Anarchie can do other helpful things...check the documentation. |
